XDM 120 - High Precision, Compact Footprint

The XDM 120 is engineered for users who need production-grade metal parts from a footprint that fits a laboratory, a dental laboratory or a pilot production cell. Although it is the smallest machine in the XDM range, it shares the same optical platform philosophy, software stack and process know-how as the large-format systems, so a process developed on the XDM 120 transfers to the XDM 250, XDM 420 and XDM 750 with predictable results.

Its fine optical spot and 20 µm minimum layer thickness make the machine especially suited to parts with small internal channels, thin walls, textured surfaces and tight tolerances. Applications range from cobalt-chrome dental crowns and bridges to injection-mould inserts, sensor housings, micro heat exchangers, tooling inserts and material research coupons.

Key Features

Why the XDM 120 performs

Design decisions that matter in daily production: optical quality, gas flow, powder handling, software openness and serviceability.

  • High scanning resolution for finer feature definition and sharper edges
  • Bi-directional powder recoating for higher build efficiency
  • Self-developed software with fully open process parameters
  • User-defined scan strategies for maximum experimental freedom
  • High-efficiency filtration with lower maintenance frequency
  • Modular powder feed cartridges for faster, cleaner operation
  • Optimised substrate clamping that uses the full build plate area
  • Low inert gas consumption for a lower cost per build

Detailed product description

Where the XDM 120 performs best

  • Dental laboratories producing cobalt-chrome crowns, bridges and frameworks in batches, where nesting density and surface finish drive profitability.
  • Research institutes and universities that need a flexible platform with freely editable parameters, custom scan paths and open material handling.
  • Tooling and mould shops producing small inserts with conformal cooling channels that cannot be machined conventionally.
  • Component manufacturers validating a lightweight, topology-optimised design before moving it to a larger XDM platform for series production.

Resolution and surface quality

  • A high-resolution scanner combined with a stable optical chain keeps the focused spot small across the entire 120 × 120 mm field. The result is a sharper melt track, more precise contours and better reproduction of fine lattice struts. Because the layer thickness can be reduced to 20 µm, stair-stepping on inclined surfaces is significantly reduced, which lowers post-processing effort on visible surfaces.

Efficiency and cost of ownership

  • Bi-directional recoating halves idle travel time compared with single-direction systems, and the optimised gas flow keeps the build chamber stable with a comparatively low argon consumption. Powder is handled through modular cartridges, so refilling and sieving happen outside the machine and operator exposure to fine metal powder is minimised. The filtration system is designed for long service intervals, reducing unplanned downtime.

Software and process control

  • The machine runs the XDM IntelliProc® data preparation suite and the XDM IntelliMake® machine control platform. Together they provide build simulation, support generation, parameter editing, layer-wise monitoring and full traceability of the process data. Parameters are not locked, which allows users to develop their own material recipes and to document them for later transfer to series production.
