XDM 420 / 500 - Large Plate, Four Lasers, Non-Stop Feeding

The XDM 420 / 500 series is built for manufacturers who need to move from prototypes to series components with a single integrated part, eliminating assemblies, welds and brazed joints. The 500 × 500 × 500 mm envelope accommodates large mould inserts, full-size structural brackets, complete combustion hardware and consolidated hydraulic manifolds that would otherwise be split into several parts.

A continuous top-feed powder system replenishes material during the build, so long jobs do not have to be interrupted for a refill. This is essential for parts that run for several days, where an interruption would compromise the thermal history and the mechanical properties of the component.

Key Features

Why the XDM 420 / 500 performs

Design decisions that matter in daily production: optical quality, gas flow, powder handling, software openness and serviceability.

  • Two plate sizes: 420 × 420 mm and 500 × 500 mm
  • Four 500 W IPG fibre lasers for high build rates
  • Continuous top powder feeding for non-stop production
  • Flow-optimised gas circuit for stable large-area builds
  • Fully open parameters and custom scan strategies
  • Premium core components for round-the-clock operation

Detailed product description

Why build large parts in one piece

  • Eliminating joints removes leak paths, fasteners and assembly labour, and often reduces weight by allowing the topology optimiser to treat the whole component as one design space. In tooling, a single large insert with a conformal cooling circuit can be produced instead of a stack of machined plates, cutting both lead time and the risk of water leaks in production.

Multi-laser architecture

  • Four 500 W lasers share the build area, each responsible for a calibrated field with managed overlaps. Software distributes parts across fields automatically and balances the workload so that no laser becomes a bottleneck. The result is high productivity on full-plate nesting without sacrificing the 20 µm layer capability needed for fine features.

Powder management at scale

  • Continuous top feeding, external dosing ports and a closed powder circuit allow the machine to run long campaigns with predictable material consumption. Sieving and refilling take place outside the build chamber, protecting operators and keeping the atmosphere inside the machine stable.

Industries served

  • Aerospace structural and engine hardware requiring large, thin-walled, internally cooled components.
  • Tooling and die casting: large inserts, cores, sliders and conformal-cooled moulds.
  • Energy and power generation: burner parts, impellers, valve bodies and heat exchangers.
  • Automotive: structural nodes, battery housings, tooling for body-in-white fixtures.
