XDM 750 - The Landmark 750 mm Platform

When the XDM 750 was released in October 2017, its 750 × 750 × 500 mm build envelope made it one of the largest powder-bed laser melting systems in the world and attracted wide attention from international trade media. It remains the reference platform of the XDM range and demonstrates the company's core competence: building very large metal PBLM machines that hold dimensional accuracy and material quality across the entire plate.

The engineering challenge of a machine this size is not simply scaling the frame. Gas flow must remain uniform across a 750 mm span, the optical chain must stay calibrated over a long working distance, and thermal distortion of the base plate must be managed over build cycles that can last many days. The XDM 750 addresses each of these with flow-simulated duct design, a rigid gantry structure and continuous in-process monitoring.

Key Features

Why the XDM 750 performs

Design decisions that matter in daily production: optical quality, gas flow, powder handling, software openness and serviceability.

  • 750 mm × 750 mm × 500 mm build envelope - far fewer design constraints
  • Flow-simulated gas ducts for stable quality on large plates
  • Self-developed software with fully open process parameters
  • User-defined scan strategies for process development
  • Intelligent monitoring and recording for unattended operation
  • External powder feed and recovery ports for non-stop production
  • Multi-laser scanning for a new level of build efficiency
  • Premium core components for maximum reliability

Detailed product description

Design freedom at scale

  • A 750 mm plate allows designers to consolidate assemblies that previously had to be split. Large aerospace frames, complete engine casings, full-scale mould cavities, single-piece hydraulic manifolds and oversized heat exchangers can be produced as one part. Support structures, orientation and nesting can be planned for the plate rather than for a sub-component.

Quality on a large plate

  • The gas circuit was optimised using computational flow simulation so that the protective atmosphere sweeps uniformly across the full 750 mm width, carrying spatter away from the melt pool. Combined with multi-laser calibration and layer-wise recording, this delivers consistent density and mechanical properties from the centre to the edge of the plate.

Continuous production

  • External powder feed and recovery ports allow material to be replenished and recovered without breaking the chamber atmosphere, so production does not stop between jobs. This is particularly important for service bureaus and for manufacturers running campaigns of large parts back to back.

Process development environment

  • For research groups and OEM process teams, the open XDM software environment makes the XDM 750 a platform for developing new alloys and new scan strategies at production scale - something that is impossible to do reliably on a small laboratory machine and then transfer to a large one.
